Tuning Plates?

I built a Mack pit, but made it a standard offset, not a reverse flow. I have between 30 and 70 degrees (depends on fire temp) between my lower and upper cooking racks. Will tuning plates help this? If so, what size should my tuning plates be? 4 inch or 6 inch?

Thanks for any help here. Very first cook on the pit was at a competition, got a 1st and 3rd. Did another comp this weekend with no calls, cooked on upper and lower racks this time. I think the wide range of temps didnt help.

Tuning plate may help some but a traditional offset typically has a pretty good swing from right to left and bottom to top. The tuning plates tend to help even out the right to left temps and will probably help a little with bottom to top as the airflow is smoothed out. As far as what size bars you want to use is completely dependent on how well you want to tune the pit.

I would make a few at 6" and a few at 4" and start with the wider one's near the fire box. You can always shuffle them around as needed.
