120 gallon first build

Post by Iwishicouldcook41 » November 7th, 2022, 7:24 pm

Been a member here for a while. I’ve done a lot of lurking, some posting, and some chatting with other members. I’m finally starting to make some decent progress on my build, so I figured I’d share. Image

Damn, love the base you setup for moving the smoker around.

I've got a 120 gallon air tank outside my garage right now I'm figuring of making into a 24" x 48" offset and cutting off the bells. Still working out the rough design before I start my first cut though.

What sorta figures did you settle on for firebox sizing? I was initially thinking an oversized firebox to eliminate an extra cut on the strips of plate I got, but I've been leaning towards sticking to the calculator after a bunch of reading.

I oversized the fb. I’m at 24x27 (130%) I’ve always wanted an offset that I could burn a decent size fire in. I did this in hopes that gases would have a bit of time to cool a bit before entering cook chamber. Also uninsulated to try and sweat some heat, as well.

We’ll have to see if any of those theories work. Haha. If it’s a failure, I can always cut a few inches off later.

Very Nice!

I think you'll like having an over sized FB.

Made a little more progress today.

I Had already pressure washed, and torched the tank out with weed burner. So I wire wheeled it all and gave it a nice acetone bath.

Then re-leveled, and got the firebox mounted. After a little more trimming.

After that, I built my fb door hinges and latch. Applied flange to back side of fb door. Mounted hinge and latch mechanism then cut away the tabs that were holding laser cut door in place.

Tacked fb door into place.

Got an early start this am, but proceeded to take grinder off the face (with respirator) and onto my chest, where it got stuck in my shirt, twice. burnt the grinder up so had to go get a new one and get my wife’s flat tire fixed. So didn’t actually start working again until around 10am. Overall happy with the progress, today.

When I sent parts to cnc guy, I had it designed to have a lip at the bottom. But after more thinking, I decided I wanted smooth bottom for easy ash removal. So I welded that section to the door.
