SmokerBuilder Forum Is Moving!

Post by Frank_Cox » January 14th, 2023, 6:47 pm

Howdy guys, It's time to update things.
I called Pete Mazz a while back and discussed updating things to a new platform.
We both agreed and felt it was best.
This site is now 13 years old and has been tapering off in use for a while now.
The old school forums like this one are having a hard time keeping up with the facebooks and stuff.

So, I built a new site and have been testing it for a while now.
Works really well and we are now over 260 active members!

I'd like to invite you all to join up if you already haven't!

Click here to join the party:
https://smokerbuilderu.com

This site works very much like a social media site but way better because you don't have big brother watching every move you make!
Also, there's no annoying ads!
It even has a very well built and maintained mobile app.
what will happen to this site:
Well, My current plan is to no longer allow new members to sign up here.
As far as the existing members, you will be able to log in and use the site until March 31st, 2023
After that we will keep the content live but lock all forums so no one can post new content or reply to threads.
You will be able to log in and download your pictures, read content, etc. on the website version of this site.

At some point in the future, at an unknown date, all support and updates for this platform will be discontinued but the content should still be viewable.

Thanks so much for being a valued member of this community!
I am so excited to see this new chapter to begin!

Thanks!
Frank Cox

I joined the new app couple weeks ago…still trying to figure out how to use it and navigate. I’m one of these geezers who don’t do FB, IG, Twitter etc…so I’m a real social media amateur! I, for one, will be sorry to see the original forum go away…suppose it’s mostly resistance to change on my part lol.

Do you have any plans to import any of the information on this forum over to the new platform?

I'm somewhat resistant to change also.

I do have a new FB account. The only reason I do, is because I needed one to follow some of Frank's live pod cast.

I'm going to miss this form. But in-away, I'm excited for the new one as well.

Hi Timmy!
Unfortunately we couldn't move everything. however, any posts that you guys want to move can be added on the new site as "Articles"
The articles can have multiple pics and text formatting. you can even embed videos etc.
members can comment on the posts just like they do here.
It is a lot like a facebook group.

This content will remain in place until we see the traffic load is non-existent anyway.
I also have the domain smokerbuilderforums.com and am considering moving the legacy version of this site which will be locked and no new content can be added to that domain. still in the planning stages of all of that but it will not be deleted.

I am loving the new platform! This has changed the game for me!
I now do all my Lives there, host the Live Q&A's, run polls, add new content, and am more active there than anywhere else.
I'm also seeing a few of the OG members signing up. Not all of them are active but they are there.

That other forum is a ghost town, you should rethink this. It’s clunky, too.

Mighty seems to be a sociAl platforms more than the forum version that’s more technical. Over years this forum is an encyclopaedia that could be useful from many people

Re: SmokerBuilder Forum Is Moving!

Morning guys!
So, I am way behind as has been my usual mode of operation.
I apologize for any confusion that has arisen from my lack of communication here.
Here's where things currently stand in regards to this forum message board.

We (my developer, Jacob, Lisa and I) have been working very hard in the background on this restructure of the online smokerbuilder community.

Here's what we have done:
1- copy and migrate a working version of this forum to a new domain called smokerbuilderforums.com
2- verify it works and updates
3- research the overall traffic that visits this site, who they are, why we think they visit, and how they interact with our online community on other sites.
4- rethink and re-strategize the smokerbuilder.com domain and how it fits in with our customers, community, and search traffic.
5- look at the mission of smokerbuilder as a biz and our goals to serve the community and our customers
6- project the long term growth of smokerbuilder and our online community and where we are going as a company along with where we hope to lead and unify our online community.

Here's a couple things I'm hearing from existing members of this community:
1- some don't like the new platform
2- some like the new platform better
3- all don't want the "encyclopedia" to go away.

Here's our top 3 concerns with keeping this forum message board open and "active":
1- this software is "open source" and MUST be maintained and updated to prevent really bad internet stuff from happening to not only this site but our members, server, and databases
2- this site taking up more and more server space every time we make updates and we will need to greatly increase the size of our server to continue keeping this site up to date.
3- bot traffic is at an all time high and is now consuming a lot of bandwidth on the server causing other sites to be slow when "brute force attempts" happen. "brute force attempts" are when someone or some company decides to try to hack into the wordpress site or this site to gain access to the admin side of the site in an effort to gain control of the databases, email functions, user data, or other sensitive info contained within them.
1000's of bots are constantly filling out every form they can find on the domain running programs to outwit security measures.

We also have a couple facebook groups that are being poorly managed and are nearly impossible to maintain.

Here's a couple things about the Facebook groups we have that are influencing moving to the new site:
1- facebook is a data machine. they only want data and get it from every swipe of the mouse or finger.
2- the groups are full of scammers and hundreds of them try to join daily. There's not enough of us too keep up with them so we don't prioritize approval of members.
3- the group has been over-run with guys that could care less about the building of smokers and only want to use it as a classifieds site to sell their smokers or promote their rub/sauce or other bbq products.
4- when we approve the 100 to 300 new join requests, a large percentage are sleeper accounts that appear to be legit but after a while start posting spam or adding their other spam accounts.
5- we have never found a way to build a legit admin and moderator group and build the necessary operating process to make the facebook group thing actually work.

Because of these points mentioned above we have decided to move the primary community to the new site permanantly.

here's a few benefits to the move:
1- one centrally located place for all of the engaged members of the smokerbuilder community to interact with each other in a modern and safe web environment.
2-the database is on another server which is paid for separately and includes all the most up to date security and privacy measures.
3- maintenance of the software, databases, etc. happens by Mighty Networks staff and requires no interaction by our team allowing us to focus in what matters most.
4- it is built very similar to what most people are used to on any other social networking site, we can post video's and images, we can create articles which are similar to blog posts or threads on this site.
5- there is private messaging allowed for members to communicate with each other and us privately.
6- I can go LIVE in the group just like in a facebook group without paying for another software
7- Events can be created and invitations can be accepted by members
8- LIVE chat is built in and can be accessed at anytime by any member
9- can still categorize content similar to forums but in this case it is called "spaces"
10- the platform supports future growth of smokerbuilder by allowing "online courses" which we have plans to add as soon as possible.

This is a long post and hopefully some of it makes sense and will be found helpful.

I would appreciate your feedback on this information.
Please reply here with any comments or input.

I was originally going to lock posting April 1st but have not done it yet.
Depending on how much feedback I receive here, I will keep it going for a little while longer.
If no feedback I will lock things up on 4/24/23

As I briefly mentioned earlier, this site will be located permanently at smokerbuilderforums.com
All existing member accounts will be accessible there and your username and password will be the same.
If for any reason you find it doesn't work, email our team at: admin@smokerplans.net

Please check in here if you have accessed your account there.

We will be deleting this content from smokerbuilder.com/forums at the end of april and redirecting all traffic to the new URL.
the new URL is: https://smokerbuilderforums.com

Thanks so much guys!
I don't take this move lightly.
It has been a very very tough decision that has taken years and years to make.

I apologize if I have upset anyone.

Thanks!
Frank Cox

Sorry to hear that this site is an endless string of work without a much payoff, especially with all of the bad actors that seem to be popping up\

and Sorry for this question if redundant, but I read it all and it was long, and I may have lost it in the read..
So, Is some of the content here getting archived somehow in the new smokrbuilderU site?
or will it be inaccessible to most if not all old forum members of the that started here??

Again, appreciate all of the work, but I cant blame you dor shutting this thing down with all that you mentioned above.
It sounds like an endless time pit for the moderators (you and yours) without much a return on investment.

Here is what I will miss:
If there were only a way to search up for instance " reverse flow smokers" as an example and then all of the members that posted their RF smoker builds popped up and then we could check those out..
Or offset smokers,
or centerfeed reverse flow smokers etc..
Any way to put them on a "tree" or "menu" that makes it easier to find them?
O do they just fall off of the new SmokerbuilderU site after a while.
maybe a tutorial of how to find certain kinds of builds would be helpful on the new site if that is even possible.

For instance, I once needed to build a collapsible shelf for a buddy and found a few on this site via the "search function" and it was helpful..
New members seem to all ask about the same questions that were covered a few months before.
I could search up the same question from a pior member, copy and paste the URL at the top of the page into a comment and that made it much easier to help others, which I believe many of uss here liked to do.
I think that is what I will miss most about the site.
The interaction there (to me anyways) is not the same because its functions and usefulness (because of the lack of ability to find and use other builds) is not the same.
the new site seems more of a hangout for a few and not really what this site was.

Hope some of this makes sense
But it is why I found this this site useful and enjoyable, and that site format/ functionality not as useful
If there was a way that I and maybe others could do the above mentioned stuff it would be good
And if it does do all of the things that I mentioned above, maybe someone could put a one time welcome tutorial together at the new site so that we could get it..

this is just tinsparks 2 cents, ok may that was 3 cents haha!! and yesssss. I have had 2 beers! lol!!
Appreciate U fellas!!

tinspark nailed it on the head. Thank you tinspark, I couldn't have said it better.

I am going to miss this site, it's where I started getting the help I needed when I built my very first smoker just over a year ago. I have built 3 since then. This site just feels like home.

The thing I don't like about the other site that tispark pointed out, is in order to find anything on the new site, you have to scroll down through all the post, it can get frustrating .

I agree with tinspark, it's so much easier to find what you want on this site.

Thank you Frank for this post!

Re: SmokerBuilder Forum Is Moving!

You're very welcome guys!
I do feel the same way about the usefulness of this site.

However, there are some features of the new site I have not introduced as of yet simply because I didn't know how the culture would develop there with the change in platforms.

1- There is a feature called "Hashtags"
This is when you see the "#" in front of a word.
You can include these in your posts and topics anywhere in the text and the search bar will find them very quickly.
I haven't said much about it yet. these hashtags are useless if they are not used correctly.

For instance #reverseflow will bring up every post and topic that includes that hashtag.
A good moderation policy and process will keep these things in check.
For these to work properly, the poster must only use one or two relevant hashtags to the comment or post.

Extra ones will confuse the search function.

2- Another feature is the "Spaces"
I got in on the early bird subscription plan and that allows me to create as many "spaces" as I want.
These spaces can be used similar to the categories on this site or even the same as facebook groups.
We can keep the content categorized this way.
Moderation will be key to making this feature work.

3- there are many more features that can be set up for FREE or even as a revenue source if funds were needed to "build it out"

I am hoping to build a team of moderators on the new site ASAP.
So far Pete has the same privileges he had on this board.
I would like to extend an invitation to any existing member here to join that team.
Only catch is, the team and the members will be relying on your experience and how active you are to help set the culture in motion and build it.

One thing that happened here is I got too busy to be engaged as the site grew.
There were several significant structure changes in the biz over time that made it really hard to commit.
I REALLY hope to curb that this go around and develop a routine that allows for me to do my part reliably.

I really do believe that all the things we like and value about the way this forum functions can be easily duplicated on the new site.
The functions are there, they just look different and are called different names.

In order to do that sustainably here's what would work the best.
• Build a moderation team that is active daily on the site with "watches" they keep. these Watches will give each one a break every so often if they want.
• meet on a regular basis (ie. monthly?) as a team via phone, zoom, or other method to create and maintain the culture and process the mod team uses.
• document and make available for members a list of community values and important housekeeping info and stick to them.
• promote the new site to draw in more people like us. Make sure to keep food related content active. Pete and I agree that the lack of food related content is what caused the primary churn among active members that show up regularly for a while then fell off after they built their smoker.
• Run interactive events, giveaways, and content monthly.
• have a dedicated "space" for moderator development, recruitment, and team interaction. A safe place of sorts to let the team vent, toss out ideas, give feedback, and other behind the scenes stuff.

Hope this makes sense. I have tried to start elements of these items over the years but I am not good at every thing it takes to make them happen.
I believe that this is completely worth it and that in the end, this could be the best thing to ever happen for SmokerBuilder's like us!

If anyone wants to discuss this further, please let me know!
I can also be reached anytime at 573-227-2277 if you would like a chat over the phone.
Thanks for being here guys and I am excited for what's ahead!
🍺🍺
Frank

Thanks Frank for that in-depth explanation.

I greatly appreciate your thoroughness on explaining things on why you made the change, and the changes to look forward too in the future on the new site, that's exciting.

I would love to throw my hat-in-the-ring to become a moderator, but I’m not qualified, plus I’m too busy to take anything else on.

Thanks again Frank!
