Is there a good way of removing it? I'm still trying to scrounge up some tanks. A guy emailed me about some five foot tall lip tanks he has but they look galvanized...

Guys....galvanized steel, simply put, is steel coated with zinc. You can weld it, cut it, etc. There is noting wrong with it. When you put a torch or a weld tip to it the high temp oxidizes it and makes.....wait for it.....Zinc Oxide! Most experienced welders are used to inhaling it and some studies suggest actual health benefits including immunity boost. But welding newbies that aren't used to it can get short lived cold-like symptoms until they get used to it. But if you insist on passing on galv steel in the scrap pile, give me a call, I'll take it!

This is a very old post that you chose to make your first post on. Faust, it has been a long time opinion of most folks on this forum to not use galvanized steel on their smokers. Of course you can use whatever you would like. How about going to the intro forum and tell us about yourself so we can welcome you..

I know RC and I'm sure he wasn't offended. I know it's easy to read words typed on a computer screen and interpret them in a way that they weren't meant. The one thing that separates this forum from others is that no one will be berated or put down for having a different view. We welcome people to share any experience or opinions that they may have on any subject. misinformation is worse than no information.

Galvanized metal is only off gassing when temps reach 900*F or so...

so using it in a location where temps get higher than that... Like a firebox, or plate at the exit of the firebox... perhaps you want to avoid that.

but anywhere where the temps are lower that that, as in, any cooking area, galvanized metal is of no concern.

Now, cutting/welding it is a different story due to the HIGH heat. But once that is done, there should be no issues.
As for near the high heat areas, if you burned it off with a large torch, or hot fire, you'd remove it.

Thinking about this logically, if you were to use galvanized metal for the tank, and ONLY the tank, you should be fine after welding is done.

Does ANYWHERE on the CC tube get 900*F when in use?

A decent grit blaster can remove 99% of galvanizing. I do it at work. Takes a bit longer than normal rust/ millscale but still gets too Sa3 standard

I have to say if that galvanized material is all I could afford I probably would wait until I could get better stuff. Why try to get other people to co-sign hypothetical conditions?
