Can I do that

Post by Izek66 » July 31st, 2018, 1:31 pm

Good day! My name is Eugene. I'm from Yekaterinburg, Russia. I want to make my first smoker. Please help me! I have some questions.
1. Can I place the FB perpendicular to the CC on the trailer so that the trailer is not too long. I drew a diagram for understanding.
Image
2. Which smoker is better: Reverse Flow (RF ) Smoker or Offset Smoker?

I don't know why your firebox design wouldn't work. It might be unconventional but I think it will work.

Reverse flow is better in my opinion. I like the even distribution of temperatures and the indirect heat that doesn't dry out what you're cooking.

I like my reverse flow as it holds much better temps than my traditional offset.

Putting the firebox of the end of the trailer only adds about 18-24 inches to the legnth. If it were me, I would much rather cut a few inches of the overall cook chamber legnth and put it in line. I feel the heat transfer of having it underneath the chamber as well as feed/cleaning issues could be overcome and your idea could work but it does have drawbacks. My guess is that most of the rack space directly above the firebox would be a hot-spot and possible unusable with out some additional heat shields/insulation.

However, we can walk you thru it if that is what your needs require.

Welcome. If you are really stuck for space why not look at a center feed reverse flow? Might solve your space problem.

What are you talking about? I want the reverse flow. Does that change FB? My trailer is 78.74 in. CC 74.8 is in. Tell me how to calculate FB. On calculator or there is the other way to. I don't want FB sticking out too much for the trailer.

Here are my calculations. Say you can reduce the length of FB. What should I do? Are there any errors in my calculations?

What distinguishes FB reverse smoker from FB straight smoker?

My treiler is 78 inch long.

Here's a pic of what I was talking about. Not my smoker but it gives you the idea. Just an option if you are tight for space. Ignore it if you don't like it.

A traditional offset smoker has the firebox on one side of the cook chamber and the exhaust on the other. The heat simply passes across and up the cc to get out.

A reverse flow offset has the firebox and exhaust on the same side of the cc. There is a solid plate under the bottom cook rack (called a baffle plate). It forces the heat to run along the bottom of the chamber from the firebox to a small gap on the opposite end of the cc. From here, it enters the cc and then travels back across and up to the exhaust.

The center feed reverse flow is a bit more complicated as it enters the heat in the middle of the cc and is designed with a baffle plate to run it in both directions. The heat then comes up around each end and exits center of cc. It's kinda like having a reverse flow smoker off of each side of a single firebox. This design usually has the firebox in the center (either behind or under the cc) and an exhaust (total of 2) for each side in the middle. The picture above is a center feed, traditional offset as the smokestacks are on each end opposite the firebox. It would not have a baffle plate.

There are different variations on them but you can almost always identify what you are looking at by the location of the smokestack (exhaust) and the firebox.

Did any of that make sense? Did I answer the questions?

Welcome to the crew!

I think you are the first from Russia to join us.

I believe you are getting the information you're asking for. The last question's answer is; they are the same size in volume, they can be different shapes though. Just whatever the person wants.

You'll want some space between the baffle plate and the top of your cooking rack. Roughly 4 inches (10 centimeters). In your drawing your baffle plate appears to be slightly lower than the top of your firebox. Generally the baffle plate is a continuation of the top of the firebox. I hope this helps.

Hey it does not matter how it is made, so long as you get the job done. And she's looking good so far. :kewl:
