The real research would be, what kind of gas is in them? Seeing them blow on car fires, I'd be a little apprehensive. :exp:

I don't think the temp is too high, I would think the long exposure to the elevated temp would cause the problem.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

I would choose to err on the side of safety. Counter weights can be all sorts of methods and safe for sure.

They work great! - Edgar's been using one since last fall - no problems.... course I keep it out of the worst of the heat ... but is you put it INSIDE the cook chamber then you're on your own ... :D

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

Could make for a shocking experience.

I also thought about it and now I think I will stay with the counter weight idea.

I put a set of car hood shocks on my lid. I just welded mounts that stick off the side about 1.5". There's enough air gap between the chamber and the shock that the shocks don't heat up at all. Mine are light weight shocks. One by itself holds the lid up, but I'm kinda OCD. Lol. A heavier lid would definitely need two, and made to hold more weight. Mine are 25lb shocks. I think you can get this type up to 50lb.

ok if used on the outside of the CC and away from the heat of the firebox.
Not ok if on the inside of the CC or near the firebox

Yea man. I'll get a couple pics tomorrow in the daylight. Like I said, its just car hood shocks. Pretty much every auto part store has them on the shelves. I got these at Pep Boys. What I did was drill a 3/8" hole in all 4 mounting spots, then put a 3", 3/8" bolt from the inside and welded the head to the inside. Then cut off the threads and ground a groove in them for the clip to snap on. A metal lathe would've made it look nicer, but you can see the grinder marks when the shocks are on.
