Main rack cooking space

Post by Smoker1 » July 19th, 2013, 8:36 pm

I'm about to start my first build and have a question about the main cooking service. I'm building a RF and I won't to make the main cooking surface from one end to another if I do that I was worried about the grease going down into the lower chamber and possibly starting a grease fire Any advice on this topic

I am assuming you are referring to an offset fire box design? If so most folks put a grease dam on the end of their RF plate and another dam where the firebox meets the fire box. But for the most part most grease vaporizes as soon as it hits the RF plate and therefore never causes issue.

Yes a rf off set fire box the baffle plate doesn't go all the way to the end it stops 5"to 7" from the end of the pipe to if I have it slambed full I was thing the pieces of meet at the end of the pipe would drip down

Yeah, you need to stop your racks before the baffle plate gap to avoid that. Mine and everyone else's I've seen stop before the end of the baffle plate for that reason.

It is also needed to keep that portion of your cooking food from being right in the flow of heat and smoke. The very end of the CC away from the FB is really air duct anything directly covering it will get blasted and it will hinder the air flow.

I know I frequently get blasted when I BBQ. And it has nothing to do with the BP. ….just sayin"
