How I make a hoop

Post by Tommy Joe » January 7th, 2012, 1:30 pm

This is the way I form a hoop for the rim of a disco or as I call them plow cookers. It works great and the cost in machinery is very little.

I tack weld using the center seam as a guide

While holding the steel thght I use a deadblow to shape the flat bar, keep it tight or it will not be nice and round

this is what it looks like. A word to the wise make it longer than you need

Great idea Tommy Joe - thanks! Are you attempting to make it the same radius or is the hoop shape close enough to get it welded to the disc with a slightly different radius?

No I don't try to get the same radius. For one the tank I'm using to shape around is smaller around than the disk. I didn't make this one round enough and had to bend it a little more on the very end. Next time I will just continue on past the starting point. It's easy enough to open or close thr radius as your tacking it on. As for the taco bell dog she does the house better this time of year, she is thin skinned and gets cold fast. And she isn't bashful about litting you know she wants in.

Thanks for the info - kinda what I thought but I'm not far from doing the same thing - now I gotta find a chunk of old tank to wrap around... :-??

Tommy Joe, great idea. :kewl: I have several pieces of pipe varying in diameter that are my jigs for such projects. it makes forming expanded metal a breeze. :)

Thanks KAM, this works well but you have to have enough weight to hold the tank still. As you can see I'm built for the job. :-bd
