Trick/suggestions for flattening the cooking grates?

Post by Rufus T. Doofus » September 18th, 2016, 9:33 am

I welded the expanded steel cook surface to my 25" x 50" frames yesterday. I apparently worked too quickly and didn't allow the heat to dissipate. I've got a good 1" warp in two of the three now. Any tricks for correcting a high corner?

Mine are made of 1" square tube. I'm thinking I just need to clamp them to something and try to put enough weight on them to fix the warp. I assume this is a common problem and some other folks here might have suggestions to get it right the first time.

I've never had any luck fixing. Always end up cutting apart and rewelding. Hope you find an easier solution cause it hurts the ego a bit to start over.....at least it does mine!

I haven't had the same problem but clamping and more clamping can Ben things back around for sure. You may have to put a little heat on it from a torch but it is just steel. Don't let it win.

I did the same. Had to tweak em. Clamps, muscle and some heat.

Yep, cut and reweld. I typically use 1x1x1/8 angle iron just for this reason
