Using a wind directional cap on stack

Post by Surf bum » December 10th, 2016, 7:43 pm

In an area where you get a constant wind vortex due to roofline, would this help to prevent occasional backdrafting ?

It would probably help. I remember a guy built a contraption on his stack to stop back drafting but I don't remember what thread it was on.

Thanks guys for the reply. Only have this problem in the winter months when the wind changes to the nnw from the ssw. Searched site but couldn't find thread info either. Have a Happy Holiday.

Depending on the size and length of your stack....I know on a drum or short stack we usually take a charcoal chimney and turn it upside down over the stack and that seems to help...

Edgar had a stack plate because I always used him in front of the house just below the roofline and the down draft/back draft was a real problem.
You should be able to fashion something with scrap metal and clamps to see if it works first but it's super simple. A piece of sheet metal about twice the area of the stack opening - then hold it above the end of the stack about half the diameter of the stack. I'm assuming you have a straight cut end on your stack. It provides just enough deflection to prevent the backdraft pressure but it can still breathe.... :D

Busy, fabbed a mock up of a 3" directional cap with maybe a shark fin design vane out of scrap Mylar at work. Can't find an order 3" cap and can get a 4" stock cap and use a 3"×4" smoke increaser- but dont know if that would create more draft? Any thoughts? No problem building the 3", plan on using all anodized blue round head rivets for effect. But-if it increases draft with the 4" I could get it next week and drill and fill with blue rivets. Finished up an air inlet handle today with some scraped flight control parts and a seat adjuster handle from a ch-47. Getting tired of squatting. Happy Holidays to all.
