wagon wheels and steering

I may attempt to build some 20" wagon wheels with some pipe I have laying around for my pit build. I'm gonna have to make a jig or some template to get everything trued up, which will be a challenge and I don't have a lathe. Would like 4 on this build - 2 near the firebox, and 2 near the front.

I've seen some pics of smokers online where the front actually turns. I've never done this, but one of the simpler looking methods was a straight pipe that came down to the center of the front axle. I have no idea how it fastens, or stays put, or turns smoothly.

I need some help if anybody has any ideas, this thing doesn't have to roll much when I do move it, but I like the look of 4 big wheels, and steering the front would be great for positioning when I cook and rolling in back under porch. Thanks.

I made two spindles with an adjustable drag link setup....steers with a pull handle. I mounted 8 inch wheels on mine. The 20inch steering wheels would take up some area but would probably work. Do a google search for go-kart steering for some ideas and possible parts. I can upload a picture later if you want.

Here it is during construction. Not good detail but the idea is there. I made spindles out of grade 8 bolts that would fit the wheel sleeves. The bolts were welded to a piece of black pipe and the wings were added for the tie-rod. then used a large bolt thru the frame cross member for the pivot point.

Here the frame is assembled and Handel added. The joints and threaded rod were from grainger but I’m sure a local farm/fleet would have them. I was able to adjust the steering to get it to steer straight by using the threaded rod.. made up for my planning errors. I framed it in to the bottom shelf and have a removable plate that covers it. I put legs on the bottom and a handle on the top of it and pull it off to set and light my charcoal baskets on.

I know this is an old post but I did one like that only mine isnt as nice. It's more redneck. Not a very good picture but you get the idea.
