Fold Down Table Designs

Post by hogaboomer » July 14th, 2021, 5:17 pm

I've been wanting to incorporate this into my builds, but I can't wrap my brain around how to do it. What y'all got? I can't find much online.

I made a fold down for my gravity feed smoker. It is very simple. It is on the side, but you may be able to modify the design for a front shelf.
It can be found on my link below. I think page 3 shows it mounted to a piece of plywood to keep it from getting scratched up til i got it mounted a few days later. And page 4 shows it mounted to the smoker and in the folded down position. The arm folds up and latches to a clevis style pin. Hope this helps.

Also, I think Dave made one too. This one may be pretty simple to make..

Boomer,
I found a few more on this site. In the search menu at the top right of this page, type in "fold* table"
The asterisk is a wild card, which means that this site will search not only for the word "fold" but "folding", "folded", "folds" etc, any word with the word fold in it.
You also may want to also search up the words "fold* shelf*" and see what pops up. A lot of em here ..

Fold Down Table Designs

Post by dacolson » July 14th, 2021, 11:00 pm

Did this one on my 2nd trailer. I kept the template and can send you a pic of the hinge/sliding mechanism I made.

When it’s open, you pull it towards yourself then lift up and it slides into a slotted rail downward - folding the table upwards.

Didn't you do one that had two pins on it? Where it didn't have to rest on that outside post?

I think I'll go with that one I posted the pic of. Nice and simple, just a couple of quick pins to hold it in place.

I had one that had two legs that fit diagonally into sockets that worked pretty well. Super simple design so I had to make it more complicated.

Just
Lift up on the front of the table and the legs pop out of the socket and it can fold down.

Wow, guess I don't have to answer as you already have a picture of my pit!

The thing that drew me to this design was the simplicity of use. I don't have to do anything but swing it up and it is instantly ready to use...no arms to install, bolts to thread or latches fo engage. Really nice for those times when you have a tray of meat in your hands and have forgotten to put the table out.

It has a spring loaded pin assembly mounted to angle iron on the shelf. It is held in the "depressed" state by the pie shaped piece mounted to the smoker leg. When I raise the shelf, the pin pops cleanly into a hole (drilled in the pie shaped piece) and is held in place. You can hear the pins snap into place so you know the shelf is set up properly each time.

I then ran a piece of braided cable between the two pins so a single tug on the cable pulls both pins and the shelf can be lowered with one one hand.

That's pretty slick! I thought that was it, after I studied on it a while. Does it stay locked in pretty tight?

Any pics of the spring pin you used?

Yes. It has practically zero play in it. Trick is getting the holes perfectly lined up for the pins and to size them properly.

I saw some of those cheap smokers outside of Lowes today, they had removable tables, just a bent round bar on each end that slides into a pipe.

He's a forum member also, YTTQ I believe that his name on here. I'm pretty sure that was his rotisserie that he built and there's a build thread on here somewhere.

That is pretty trick in the video but not mine. I made my pivot in the back so it lays closer to the pit and does not interfere with the door in any way. He must have a reason for wanting his shelf to be readily removable but that just sounds like a problem to me. Easy enough to do tho with a second set of spring-pins.

Thanks for sharing.

I decided to take the easy way out and made it removable. I like it. It's a little big, that's a grill I had left over from a different build.

Agreed. Wrapping is tough on a narrow shelf. You’ll like that.
