Quite a few... always count on slightly less coverage than the can says it can do. That was done in a lab you are doing it in your garage.
I'd give it a minimum of two coats and probably three if you still got some more in the can. Let it dry thoroughly between coats... a couple of days. That way you can see where you have missed and what needs a quick sand prior to another coat.

Now if you can get that paint in a can (not a rattle can) get a couple of liters and spray it on via spray gun. You'll get a better result without the streaks of a narrow rattle can finger valve. However if not, just keep it to light coats. And you can always purchase more paint...

I would prefer to spray it in my gun but I can't find it in a can.

What about using automotive 2K on the exterior and just using the high heat paint around the firebox door?

I'd think that would work. You could always use aluminium checker plate around the firebox door if you did not want the paint peeling from the heat.
I used high heat paint (not rattle can) and used a roller (too windy to spray outside) and it did not blister while I had it. Now that it has gone to the restuarant I can't say if it is still good, but presume so.

Do you guys think I should weld the bullet hinges so I can remove the doors or not?

I plan on welding mine that way, one for the easy of painting mainly. I really don't foresee the door coming off unless in a earthquake

I was also thinking painting would be easier. But the top door might need to be fixed I think.

I have the top & side door fixed, & the CC door is removable, purely for painting, haven't removed it since I started using it. :kewl:

I made all mine removable. I figured it would be easier to replace gaskets when (and if) the need replacing.

Hahaha... yes the grinding is the hardest part. Encourages one to become better at welding. :D

Paint job looking sweet. Are you using automotive paint?

What you can see is automotive paint. Around the firebox door I've used rustoleum high heat

Do you guys paint the inside of the charcoal and firebox door?

I'm worried the seal comes loose if the door starts to rust.

The firebox door gets pretty hot, so doubt the paint will last anyway. Put it this way I did not. The top chute door might be OK, once again I did not. Once that seal sticks it sticks pretty good. If you really want you can "season" the firebox door with a bit of olive oil prior to the first burn that will give it a nice black patina.

Will do the oil but obviously only once the seal is stuck?

I've seen seasoning mentioned a lot. What exactly does that entail?

Never paint the inside of the smoking chamber. Just a good oil seasoning will be enough. Once it gets a smoke residue, along with the oil, it will be protected from rust.

You get some preferred high heat type food grade oil and do a good wipe down of the interior of the smoking chamber. Then you start it up and do a fairly high heat run and let the oil sizzle some. It will protect the interior from rust and also keep food from getting off flavors that may have been present on the metal used to build the smoker.

I didn't do anything to the inside of mine and it is covered with a dry coating of smoke and ash.

Absolutely. Stick the seal on clamp the door shut for a couple of hours to ensure it has really stuck. THEN you can sort the inside of the door out. Basically when you do your first burn to season the cook chamber you can smear the inside of the firebox door with a little olive oil/vegetable oil etc NOT MOTOR OIL :D
Run it fairly hot for a couple of hours. That way you'll get a nice dark patina in the cook chamber and if you choose to do so, the inside of your firebox door.
And seasoning is not some secret magic ritual. Just get a bottle of olive oil/vegetable oil etc and wipe everywhere inside the cook chamber. Even put some in a squirt bottle and spray into the hard to get regions. Fire up the smoker, let her burn hot for a few hours and you are done and dusted.
It puts a coating on the steel that will protect it from rust. Just be aware that if your are OCD/CDO and just have to waterblast your cook chamber and racks after cooking it will take the coating off in places... so don't do it. :D

I made the cook chamber and Racks from stainless so I could wash it out. I must be ocd lol.
So the stainless shouldn't need oil on it then right ?
