Found another overlooked mistake in the GF plans. The plans Call for 10 1/8- 3/4x3/4 angle iron pieces for the rails to hold the racks. But, when you look at how they are welded and how they are used, you need 20 of them.

I guess you could just use two pieces per rack, then the plans should state that, or they need to be changed to reflect the correct quantity of 20. Now, I had to put another order, my wife is going to kill me, as I told her yesterday, and I quote, "I have all the steel paid for" lol

You only need the top bit of the rack holder on the last third or so. That is just to stop the rack from tilting. So if you wanted to save a bit of money you can cut the top one in half and only weld the top and bottom on the first bit.

On my reverse flow I used 1 in channel and square tubing. Made for a very nice sliding rack which was flush on the left and right where I welded more expanded metal and some sheet so food couldn't fall into cc.

You can kind of see it in this pic. The outside of the rack has a bar welded onto it that fits in the channel. Probably not any easier or cheaper, but it looks and works very smooth.

Went out and took some pictures. I plan on the same rack design on my mini. Like I said probably not easier or cheaper but it slides like butter.

Well its been a while since my last post and I have been busy, granted most of my work is done between the hours of midnight and 2am, I'm almost finished, think.

I did redo the door as my first try warped to help and so I upgraded to 11 gauge sheet metal and the 2nd time is nice and flat.

So here are some pics. Be nice, lol.

Oh, by the way, its possible to install the Firefox and chute in one piece without any lifting equipment or any other help, just my two skinny arms. It was not fun and it took some brute force but not as hard as I thought it would be. I did cut out a piece of the frame to get it in.

Well, I'm getting to the point of putting the doors on and I have a question of what's the best way to clamp them on. Straps, or I was thinking of getting some wood and using the pipe clamps to clamp the wood across the top of the smoker.

Also, my main door weighs over 180 pounds. I had it clamped to the smoker, I had issues of finding a good way to clamp it. I guess i could get a few more pipe clams, then 4 I have now to hold it.

All it feels good to be in the final stages of this build...

Thanks, going to use an heatermeter with an RD25 damper. The blower will have up to 28cfm, so its should be plenty.

Well' I managed to get the doors on, I still need to do the latches.

I couldn't wait to give it a try so I'm seasoning it now

Not much left too do. Its definitely not perfect, but it does what it needs to do perfect and that's hold temp for some good BBQ. Going to be posting some food porn tomorrow.

Its been a fun project, I would love to make a Mini, but my wife would kill me. I still have to add a side shelf and a rack underneath


I do have one question. Last weekend when i was seasoning it, it took forever to cool dpwn. I shut it down at 1130pm(300°f) and at 230am it was still at 140°. I left it outside the rest of the night as did not want to put it in the garage until I knew it was completely cooled down. How long does it take to know for sure its out.

Looks great. A few coats of paint and it'll look like a new one...
