Recessed Temp Controller and Probe Conduit

Hi everyone!

I am building the DP GF smoker design. I have seen some do a recessed CyberQ or something similar in the front right face of these cookers. How did you guys run the probes into the cabinet? Was it a galvanized pipe? How do you keep the heat and smoke from exiting into the controller area? Finally, what are the dimensions to make the recess into the face to mount the controller and be able to plug in the probes from the bottom? Thanks everyone!

I haven't done it that way but I have seen others do it. We try to stay away from galvanized stuff. Black pipe fittings are welcome though. As far as the size of the recessed area, that whole side is open that you can do whatever with, so make sure and allow yourself room. Gizmo put an electric plug on one of his so he could just plug in the cooker and the controller was already wired in.

You can use high heat silicon plugs for where the probes enter the cook chamber. They work quite well.

And ditto the caution on using galvanised. Normal black steel is good.

That WSM plug is ideal. What size is it? I would need to know to use the appropriate sized pipe...

Unless I'm reading other listings wrong, it looks like a 1.25" hole, 1.625" total diameter.

Heatermeter, can you PM me about your controller? Also need info on other fans out there that will fit the 2" ball valve, even if adapter is needed. Keep seeing a lot of square ends instead of circular.

Rodcrafter, i cannot get PMs to leave outbox. Can you address?

That will tell you just about every thing about the Heatermeter. There is also a forum dedicated to the Heatermeter at the virtual Weber forums.

What I did to get my blower to attached to the two inch threaded pipe. I have what is called the RD25 damper(3d printed) that holds an 28cfm blower. That has a 1 inch 3d printed threaded adapter, then into a 1 inch to 2 inch adapter(black pipe). The damper is kinda nice, but is not really needed on the GF, as it is very stable without having to control the air flow into the smoker

I will echo HMB's comments. Building a HeaterMeter has made my leaky horizontal smoker almost usable.
