I was sure I had stopped to take another picture, but this is all I got. Tube insulated and welded minus the 4 pieces the plans say to leave out. Gonna try and get the interior chamber cut and placed tonight.

Was able to get a few of the interior plates cut and fit. Not gonna be able to touch it this weekend so I’m hoping to get back at it on Monday.

Got a little more work done this weekend.

Really enjoying watching this thing take shape and getting hungry thinking of all the food to be cooked. This stuff is so addicting that I find myself thinking of the next project while I’m working on finishing this one.

That's a good sign. Means you are enjoying the current project and looking forward to the next. Yep, you are addicted. :D

So I’ve seen a few guys welding permanent fire grates in place. I had thought about doing it, but wanted to check with the masters before deviation. I was also going to copy another build and weld in some 1/2 bar stock instead of the expanded metal leading into the CC. Any reasons why this may all be a bad idea?

I would definitely make the fire grate removable. If there is ever a runaway fire, that is your only way to shut it down. The 1/2'' bar stock should be fine as long as you have enough space between them.

Removable is definitely the way to go. It helps to shake some of the ash down too when your goals ash up.

@ajfoxy pointed out to me (in my thread...) that in the event of a runaway fire, a removable grate does allow you do dump the fire into the ash box. I also realized that I've got a minor problem with "non-burnable" material showing up in my natural lump charcoal that would be more than a little difficult to remove with a fixed grate. A removable grate would make that pretty easy.

I put bars in my throat opening instead of expanded. I have a removable grate.

Thank you all for the input. Planning on doing the bars for the opening to CC and a removable grate.

The truck was out on the pad for pretty much all the work. Just got her backed in when I was able to take some photos.
