Gravity feed pellet feeder

Post by Weldun » August 8th, 2017, 8:25 pm

Like most of us here I can't seem to let my mind idle, I've often wondered how a tube that was inside the charcoal chute filled with wood pellets that would feed them to the burning charcoal as a smoke source would work, so I took a piece of 2" OD x.065 wall ss tube and welded some magnets on and gave it a go. One of my concerns was bridging which didn't appear to be an issue, another concern was if this would affect my temperatures which wasn't an issue either. I placed the bottom of the pellet tube flush with the top of the transfer tube opening. I was counting on the pellets resting on top of the burning charcoal which didn't quite go as planned, some did and more than some ended up in the ash box but still showed promise. I have some perforated ss sheet that I think I can roll a cylinder from and place on the end of the pellet tube and keep them from falling through until they become ash.

Yes indeed that is quite flash. Very interested to see how your extended testing goes. Definitely :points: for outside the box thinking.

That is a great idea! I used a motorcycle baffle tube and used pellets in it and placed it in the lower part of the firebox. Buying the right size baffle tube is cheaper than one of those A maze n smoken tubes.

Looks at a piece of meat and wonders how many ways can I smoke that.

I appreciate the kind words, I think the greatest asset we have here is the ever growing collective group, this forum is like one huge think tank that never ends and is filled with folks that come from all different backgrounds and experiences who can share ideas and opinions with no threat of ridicule which is very rare these days, and for that I am truly grateful. I will post how things go when I figure this thing out!

That's awesome man! That is the goal here! I remember when I was learning how to build pits and stuff and how mean people would be when you asked a question or they got tired of answering the same thing over and over. we still have never had that problem.... ever!

That's why I like this forum.
Even tho it says "expert" up there by my name, I still feel that I'm a a newbie.
Nobody has ever posted any derogatory comments or made me feel like I was a lesser human being just because I don't have the same level of knowledge or expertise that they do.
After all, nobody was born an expert.

Gonna find out tomorrow if the addition of a perforated cap on the bottom will keep all my pellets out of the ash box

Nice.
For a moment there I thought. That's a trippy little unit coming out of your chute lid... then realised it was a light in the background. :D

About 1/2" above the fire grate, I made the overall length about 2" short so I have some adjustment.
