Elmacho's Mini Build(s)!

Post by Elmacho » December 20th, 2017, 4:34 am

Well, it has been a long time coming, but It is time to start the Mini Build. I have had the plans for a couple years now, just have not had the time to devote to building this thing right. My last build took 10 months because the shop was 2.5 hours away and driving 5 hours to work a couple hours here and there was brutal. This time, a local buddy made a deal with me. I can fully utilize his shop, if I build him a smoker also. Well building two should be just a small effort more than building one, so heck let's build three.

After a lot of grumbling and cursing from the post office, my fire boxes arrived today! I look forward to getting these built, and by all means if anyone has suggestions or insight into something I could do different, by all means, let me know.

Keep the pictures rolling, I have most of my material ordered, just waiting for the tubing, hopefully over the next week. Have fun!

There you go, off an running. Don' want to rush these things now. I must admit I have also been somewhat slow on my mini builds as well. Hopefully next year will be better in regards to having a tad more time to complete them.
Must have cost an arm and a leg to get the steel posted.

Elmacho's Mini Build(s)!

Post by Elmacho » December 20th, 2017, 9:47 am

Postage wasn’t bad. Flat rate boxes are awesome! Total postage was around $40 I think for ~230lbs of steel.

I will definitey take lots of pictures for sure.

Thanks Frank for all your guidance. I’m sure I will have many questions to come.

That sorta thinking is going get you a seat at the big boys table.

One of the things that held me up from starting this project was the need for a good welding table. I found this one on the google and really liked the idea behind it.

Image

I initially could not find any plans or info on the table so I drew it up in sketchup and bought the steel. Later I found the guy's build thread for the table and was pleased to find out I pretty much nailed the dimensions. The hardest part about building a welding table is not having a welding table. Luckily found a youtube video that addressed that very topic and viola! Turned out surprisingly square, level, and plum.

My casters come in tomorrow so once the table is complete, I get to start tacking up the frames and fireboxes.

Nice table, but I hope you don't drop anything, your toes may not survive, lol.

I saw that table while searching for tables, but my wife would kill me if I made one. So I had to settle with HF folding tables.

If you would like information about building your own heatermeter or having someone build one for you, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Thanks all. Those are NOT my toes. Every time I show that picture the first comment is about welding in flip flops. :) That guy is crazy anyway.

I cannot express the joy of having the skins drawn up already from smokerplans.net. Frank definitely goes the extra mile. I dropped the nine sheets of 16ga off at the plasma shop and they were able to pull the file straight into their cutting software.

We pulled the first piece out to verify measurements and sure enough it was spot on!

Always good when a plan comes together.
Nice welding table. One day when the magical shed fairy doubles the size of my shed I might look at a project like that.

I never saw a welding table like that. I like it because you can clamp stuff all over that rascal.

Another cold night in the shop. Really going to have to invest in some propane for that heater.

With the welding table complete, it was time to inventory all of my firebox puzzle pieces. It is going to be a long day of building fire boxes tomorrow.

Image

I was hesitant at first to have the pieces laser cut, but man will it save a lot of time and headache.
