DP Charcoal Basket

Post by Bucky Badass BBQ » August 29th, 2018, 2:23 pm

Does anyone have pictures of a charcoal basket they added to a DP. Trying to figure out how to mount it in and not effect the draft.

If you're talking about putting one in the CC to preheat it, I saw someone using an old cast iron skillet full of charcoal and they sat it on top of the baffle in the CC.

No in the firebox, seen where some was talking about it.

I think you might have your forum threads crossed. There is no reason to have a charcoal basket on a GF, it goes completely against the purpose. I'm thinking you were probably reading about charcoal baskets for RF or UDS styles.

Or else you were thinking of the ash tray at the bottom of the firebox?

I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere that the original DP plans didn't have a removable grate in the FB, that might be what he's asking about.

Yes, in case you have a runaway fire or the fire starts to move up your chimney chute you can pull the basket hot to get the coals out of the chute.

I had a GF smoker before that had a removable basket the hot coals where in the basket with an ash pan underneath it that you put your would chucks in.

The only pic I have of mine from the Double Pan was down the chute. Had a handle on the edge of it to pull out. It just rested on two pieces of steel welded to the sides of the firebox. Nothing overly technical.

What @ajfoxy & @rodcrafter said. Not a basket per se, but a removable grate instead of a fixed grate. Mine uses Frank's suggested reinforcing rods and 1/2" angle iron for the grate, and I welded a couple of 1/2" angle iron brackets inside the ash box for it to rest on. Works pretty well for me.

And as I noted in my "It's time" thread, I pretty much now consider a removable grate mandatory in a gravity feed. I'd never put a fixed grate in one.

Used 5/8 stainless rod on this one. Rods are free floating so ashes drop easily into stainless pan!

Looks great, the gap between them is really touchy.
