Gravity Feed Fire Grate Mods

Post by mp4 » December 27th, 2019, 8:27 pm

It seems like many of us have noticed ash building up on our gravity feed fire grates. I have to tap mine out every couple hours to keep things rocking and rolling.

One thought was to use square bars configured corner up and maybe increase the distance between the bars. I figured I would try grinding my round bars that way instead of replacing them.

I have some cooking to do this weekend and thought this would be a good time to try it out. I'll let you know how it works out.

One of the very few times that I've had any interest at all in a like button.

I'll be interested in hearing how it works.

Here's an action shot - I thought it looked cool...

I place a fire brick under the grate and put wood chunks on it to add flavor. Tonight its mesquite.

I'm fairly confident we have a solution!

I haven't touched it for 10 1/2 hours and Voilà! I have a good burning fire and a pile of ash. I figure it burned about 8 lbs of Kingsford in that time holding a steady 225 all night.

Looks very promising. What's the open spacing in the grate?

I've been planning on building a replacement grate with 3/4" spacing instead of 1/2", but instead of rebar, I think I'm going to try 1/2" angle iron (points up.)

I have been having the same problem with my mini GF. I guess it's time to modify or rebuild my grate. Thanks for the idea.
