I used a shop vac before and was a pain because the filters clog really fast with the ash. Also if you leave the ash in the fb it can deteriorate the metal. Ash holds moisture and can chemically attack steel.

The ash will attract all the humidity you get down there and rot your box out from the inside. As mentioned, I would keep it as clean as possible. Many will put a tray in the bottom of theirs so, if they forget too often, the tray/ash pan can easily be replaced.

Finished the other shelf. Decided to make it collapsable as well.

Looking like it's coming together very nicely.

Assume you need to pull the bolt to collapse the shelf?

No I just lift up on the shelf and the two arms drop down. I didn’t weld the arms to the shelf. The bolt is essentially a hinge. I tightened it with a lock but but left it loose enough to allow the arms to rotate. I’ll take a closer picture.

Alright, done with the build. Just needs paint and a Q view. Had some extra metal so made a metal tray to catch my charcoal ash when I pull out the charcoal basket. Keep the mess off my patio.

Charcoal box to catch charcoal from my cleanout I added at the bottom of the fb.

:biggrillin:

Finally got around to painting it last week and cooking on it. Highest temp I reached was 455 during the curing of the high heat paint. It holds great at lower temps and heats back up quick after opening the door. Should be even better for the next cook after getting the gaskets on. It also cooks very even. Very happy with the resilts. Thanks for the advice.
