Frankencube xl
Can anyone tell me if the frankencube XL is insulated or if it's possible to make it so?

Nope, not insulated. Think of it as an upmarket, square UDS. Not sure if insulating it would be of any real benefit as such.

Pretty chilly here in the UK this time of year. And I guess it would be more fuel efficient in the summer.

Insulating it would be ok around the firebasket area but I wouldn't insulate above the baffle plate. the unit will need to sweat some heat out the sides or it could overshoot temp and then it wouldn't be easy to control.
On another note... The biggest thing to remember about direct fired charcoal smokers with a large fuel capacity is the unit must be air tight!
