36”x68” Santa Maria grill

Here’s the start of a Santa Maria grill for a friend. It’s 36x68 and will have two cooking grates. The firebox is 1/4x12 flat bar. I used 1/4x4 on the bottom and will fill with 14 gauge sheet to help save on weight. The walls will be lined with fire brick. I’m copying the subterranean/bbqpitboys that I saw online. It’ll have removable fire grates and ash pans.

Got the frame and caster plates welded today. Now the fun part getting it off the horses. The wife and daughter are gonna love me.

They’re not that heavy duty and weigh about 30 lb each. As for the over head crane I’m with you.
It actually wasn’t that bad getting it off the horses. I picked one end and the wife drug out the horse then repeat.

All I’ve gotten done is the angle welded in for the fire brick and the casters on so I can roll it around. Spreading my time between this and the mini gf I’m building.

I would like to hear more about that one.

Guy near me built a small boat in his basement. He had double doors leading out to the outside and he carefully measured and built the boat to fit out those doors on an angle. He had the skeleton on big saw horses and when it came time to flip the boat over I helped pull the saw horses out of the way. When the boat was done it fit out through the doors just fine......but he had to hire a crane to lift it over the back fence and into the front yard as the gate was smaller than the doors. It was a nice boat.

Made some progress on the grill today. Upper frame to hold in the fire brick is done along with the frame for the adjustable grate.

Finally got some shop time in this weekend. I was able to get the cook grates, fire grates, ash pans, and cables with the ratchet and paw done.

It’s finally done except going over it to get out the grinder swirls with a flap disc and sander. I’ll be delivering it to it’s owner hopefully on Tuesday. He’ll be powder coating it since he owns a powder coating business. It’s a good thing it’s done and I’ll be getting paid because I could use a little extra casino money for the cruise I leave for on Thursday.
