Carolina style pig cooker

Post by breavis » November 3rd, 2021, 3:59 pm

In my area of West central NC we mostly burn wood and scoop the coals and place them under the meat. I've known people who had an oil drum made to cook BBQ but seems like each one was designed different. Most of the people I know who had one have got rid of their cooker and I haven't found many plans anywhere. So I thought I would share my experiment if anyone is looking at something like this also. I used a scrap drum I once cut in half. I welded it together as best I could then cut the hood. The first way I cut didn't close well so I cut a different way. One of the biggest decisions to make is how would it breathe. I cut one door opening and made a vent. I used charcoal to see how it would breathe and hold heat. One the side I made the door/vent it did well. But when I filled it up with charcoal I realized I need a door opening for the be other side. Then I burned some wood and scooped coals and I think this design will work. I have a drum I need to get oil out of and it will be the actual cooker and I'll make a trailer but that won't happen until spring.

I make the hinges on all the grills I've sold and I also make exhaust dampers too. I first cut the hood just along the sides but it didn't close well. I welded it back down. I don't like the idea of cutting half the drum so I went this route
