THIS IS THE WEEK!!!!!

Post by Bkndsdl » April 4th, 2016, 8:50 pm

Thanks guys!

THIS IS THE WEEK!! Forecast looks good for this weekend, so I'm going to try to finish it! I ordered the compressor for this Friday. Let's hope everything goes as planned!

I got the concrete poured so I can now turn the smoker; this way I will be able to have the smoker outside of the shed and still be able to close the door.

I figured out how to move the vertical's damper plates; I used some flatbar, some rod, and some pipe. I basically made an actuation arm that has pins on it; the pins lock into the damper plates and move them in or out, allowing me to control the heat going into the vertical smoker.

Here's the pipe pieces on the dampers and on the back of the smoker. The soapstone lines indicate when the plate is quarter open, half open, and full open. I plan on cutting a groove into these at the lines, so I can tell where the plates are in regards to the opening.

Image

Here's the flatbar with the rods installed.

Image

And here's the rod in place; pretty simple operation. It isn't perfect, but it'll allow me to open and close the dampers while the smoker is in operation without burning myself or making some elaborate operating mechanism........

MAJOR STEP! I got the center section cut out!

Image

Here are the boxes installed; these are the boxes filled with insulation. Here you see the boxes, and the base plate that holds them in. This is 3/8" plate. It rides on two pieces of 1/8" flatbar. I had to add a small wedge piece on the left side to make the boxes sit flush with the vertical bottom plate.

Image

View from the top; you can see how close the boxes are to the top. Snug fit!

Image

View from the bottom.

Image

View from the top again, with the plate put back in. I am thinking of adding a flatbar to go around this plate so that it sits level in the hole. This is the config that I probably will use the most. When I want to use the smoker as an oven, like when I want to do pizza, I will remove all the pieces in the middle and the heat will rise right through this hole.

Image

I started working on the exhaust closure plates today, but didn't get very far with it. I will hopefully get that done tomorrow, then I'll level the whole thing and adjust one of the legs for the casters, it's just a tad short. Then.............it's grind, grind, grind, grind til Friday! Can't wait!!

IT IS IN PRIMER!!!!!

It was a CRAZY, comedy-of-errors weekend, but at 7:30 PM yesterday, I finished spraying the primer on the smoker!

It is going to rain Tuesday and Wednesday, but it is clear Friday through Sunday, so I am hoping and praying that I will able to finish it this weekend!!

Thanks guys! I am stoked! Hopefully I will have it in paint this weekend, the weather is supposed to be clear somewhat Friday, but it's looking good for Saturday and Sunday. The paint needs 8 hours between coats, so if I get a coat on at 10:00 Saturday I could put the second coat on at 6:00 in the afternoon and be totally finished with the paint. Then assembly and final placement Sunday after church, so I could possibly have it ready to smoke something (Turkey I am being told!!) next weekend!!

Thanks guys!

Every time we would make something or have something that needed paint, my Dad would always say 'paint it red'.........

I painted it red, Dad.

First coat.

I have to wait 8 hours between coats, so I will put the second coat of red on at 5:00 today. Then I will reverse the taping and paint the remainder black. Then final assembly, and final placement! I can't believe it's almost done!
