Kamado smoker grill...sort of

Post by Wreckless » February 13th, 2012, 7:44 am

Having grown up the son of a Marine Corps aviator, we always had a Kamado grill. While grilling was the order of the day back then, those things would do wonders for a simple burger, a tenderized skirt steak was melt in your mouth fare. The downside was they were fragile and a replacement was on order for the next tour of duty. Never did smoke on it, always meant to. Wandering aimlessly thru the local " we buy steel sCRAP" one day, I came across this little gem looking to be rebar in it's next life. Poor lil thing just jumped in my truck knowing it had found a home.

Another downside to the Kamado for me at least, it was only set up for charcoal / lump, nada on the stick burning. I have firewood galore but charcoal doesn't grow as well on my place. No problem, we can fix that. A kamado offset hybrid, charcoal and stick. I fabbed up a firebox typical of any offset smoker, with a divider wall to burn wood indirectly for long smokes and a separate ash dump / collector directly below the cooker for charcoal grilling. A firebox door on one side and a cleanout door on the opposite end. An inlet damper for regulating temps on the firebox end was installed on the FB door and an internal rotating damper placed in the cooker body neck for regulating temps on charcoal cooks. The little beast has a 1/2" thk body, add all the other plate and it was getting quite heavy. A frame was built for a bit of mobility with a small storage space underneath. Hanging out watching Dad grill was a family social event but we were constantly looking for a place to set a beverage and such. Can remedie that as well. A partial wrap around prep table / mini ledge was added. The smoker grill dome was provided by a 24" propane bell end I had left from a previous build and a Kamado replica stack cap was fabbed up. Two inside grates were installed plus a coal grate, a temp gauge at each grate level and finished with a white metal blast and high temp satin black. Everything worked as I had hoped, minimal fuel usage and held temps like an oven. After a few cooks on her, she found herself a home with some good ol boys at their 72" plasma, 8 tap keg island, poker table man cave. What a life.:D

Thanks all for the kudos! :D A cooker that works well, looks good, and some attaboys from other builders and cooks, keep these builds from ever seeming like, well... ( pardon the language) x_x work.
smokeone...thanks! I was up in the air on deciding on a ledge, it took some of that end of the day pondering time to figure it. A brew with nowhere to go decided that it was getting one.
dcman and Dino B...thanks! WTF rang in my head several times during the build. A u suck contender? I have been a u suck contender many times but it was rarely tied into any approval, nice change. :)
Blazer...thanks! The NASA version prolly wasn't built with 1/2" steel. Those aliens with the man cave should be using this well after the first colony is established.
Frank_Cox...thank you! It was a bell reducer. The gradual lead-in made it oh so nice for what I wanted.
Jethro1 ...thank you!
Rick...Thank you! R2Q2...thats funny stuff. =)) The star wars theme song occured to me several times during the build, it wasn't intentional but...whathehey.
