Wow rick u made some good progress on this build and it u do some beautiful work that is going to be a very versatile cooker keep up the great work and thanks for sharing
Rick, I tried to look at your drawings to see hwat your doing with the side compartment, but I couldn't read it. So that is my first question then I see your using a Guru, but what is the heat source? if you don't mind my asking. I just know this is going to be cool and I can't wait for details.
Current Smokers: Backyard RF Offset and Hybrid RF Offset trailer rig with Cowboy cooker and fish fryer, always room for more........
Thanks guys! I'm sure you 2 would make fine foster folks but I'm still focused on this conception for now - we'll talk siblings later over some pie....
Charcoal/wood R/C. The charcoal basket/ash pan slide out like drawers. The side compartment provides a sheltered air intake area, houses the draft mechanism, fan, maverick, etc. away from the elements and tucks away all the wires for good. Dam thing ended up with 4 doors and a removable service panel ... and hanging doors is one of my least favorite things to do....

Got some more stuff done this morning.
Finished skinning the main cabinet...
Installed the rails for the pangrates, fire basket and ash pan....
You can just see a little insulation peeking out through the draft opening at the bottom right.
Time to make the last cabinet panel - the marriage jamb for the doors.
Man I love throwing sparks!

I actually got further on Eli yesterday than I thought I would.
Then our team got together for a taste test. Comp next weekend.
Dang fine day for "Q" around here...

Since DC asked so nice - Here's a close up of a pangrate as I call it. It's an aluminum baker's half sheet then a piece of expanded metal bent into a pan shape to fit inside it. Keeps all the flavors of different foods from dripping on each other when cooking at a comp.
Finished the last panel frames for the doors and control panel and clamped them into place to check the fit....
It might sit like this a few days with back to back comps the next 2 weekends but I'm still figuring out a couple things on it anyway ....

I copied and moved these in order but they 'landed" in here all screwed up. Anybody know how to prevent that? Took quite a while to resort them all.
Handle/latch hard point installed in FB door - same process for CC door...
Temp gauge mount installed - I want the finished depth of the gauge to be nearly flush with the front panel of the door...
Stuffed full of Roxul insulation (3-1/2 inch) into a 2 inch thick door panel….
Sawing off the insulation with an old bandsaw blade...
Silicone seal the gauge recess...
Install the door's outer skin….
Built a charcoal maze/fire basket...
Installed the ash pan and maze on siderails
Starting the draft mechanism - typing paper should be enough gap where this part doesn't get hot….
Built a screw saddle for the draft door...
Where the saddle goes - only way I know of to account for inconsistencies within the mechanism and greatly reduces binding...
