My smoker/ pig roaster

Post by alive226 » September 22nd, 2012, 8:18 pm

As I mentioned in my intro, I was lucky enough to come across a 200 gal Culligan water tank, 5" long by 30" diameter, for free. Writing my intro got me motivated. Well I started on it today. I don't have a lot of fancy and expensive tools. So I bought a couple of cut off blades for my circular saw. I got about half way through today. I borrowed a friend's laser level to start with marking where to cut. I marked the center of the top, then after measuring a 1/4 way around, I leveled the tank on the floor, then setup the laser for a straight line across the tank. I marked the tank, then started with cutting. The tank was open and outside for years, so last weekend, I ran a hose through it and got out most of the sludge left behind by the years outside.

It took awhile to cut, but I got half way through. I have not measured how thick the steel is, but it seemed fairly thick. I measure it and put it in a future post.

My plan is to cut it in half length wise, then add two feet to the middle section. Because the ends are not flat, it will be a bit of a pain to match them, but I should be fine as long as I take my time. There will be no desperate fire box. The fire will be underneath. When smoking, I will have it one side. When cooking the pig, I will keep the fires to the ends and when grilling, it will be directly beneath. I will be able to raise and lower the the trays for the charcoal or wood. I will also have a removable and adjustable mount for my Dayton electric rotisserie motor. I have the stainless skewer from my dad's old roaster. So I have started. It will be a slow build, as I have all winter and a three car heated garage to work in. I will keep you updated w/ pictures. I will try to add a few now, but I seem to be having trouble, so I will try again after I post this.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but every time I try to add a jpg photo, I am told the image file I am trying to add is invalid. Advice?

Sounds like a great build! I think the problem you're having with your pictures posting is that the file size is too small. You need to resize your pictures to be 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels or smaller for them to Post

I hope this worked. If so, it is a picture of measuring and marking the line to cut with the laser level.

This is after I started cutting the tank. No more pictures, but I did get it almost all the way cut. I broke my second blade.

One question. Is the tank galvanized or just painted grey? If its galvanized you may have the problem of it off gassing. (poisonous gas)

Anyone have any more input on this?

It is not galvanized, it is just painted grey. I am using a circular saw with a metal cut off blade. I have gone through two blades so far. I'm just taking my time while cutting.

Different angle.

Here it is cut in half. If you can tell by the photo, there is a coating on the inside. It is light in color. Hopefully this won't be too big of a pain to get out. I noticed it when I was scraping some sludge out of it. Some of the coating started to flake off.

I think it was originally a water tank that someone started using to hold oil or fuel oil.
