Questions on a double barrel

Post by sawmillman » July 31st, 2014, 10:03 pm

I'm am building a double barrel smoker because I got the parts for free. The first question is can I just use the barrel lid as a door for the smoker not the fire box got that with the kit ? I'm looking at this and also wondering if I need to use the legs or can I just connect the top and bottom barrels with the collars and yes they have dampers in them. Thanks in advanced.

I would use the FB door kit. It's a matter of cutting out a chunk and bolting it on. Think it would be less of a headache down the road. I'd use the legs to just for added support.

Use them both if it's not too much work. In the chimney cleaning world, seeing these set ups, they run a 6" flue with a damper.
Hope this helps.

:yth: you could always make a set of hinges for the top barrel, like some of the UDS have, and then make a couple sliding shelves on the inside of the top one for the trays to slide in and out of, and maybe a toggle latch to hold it closed, JM2C

I'd say in this case it's personal preference. I'd go out the top though.

UDS's have a slow air exchange anyway - I'd put the stack out the top with only a lip sticking inside for welding….. :D

That should be fine for the stack.

I'm sure you'd be looking at galvanized for a/c parts. I'd try to find steel if you can

I would shoot for that. You don't want it dripping down into the CC

I have been working on and off getting this smoker built going slow but almost there.looking into a rack using pipe so I can make it slide in and out. I also have some firebrick is it a good idea to put them in the fire box? Thanks for all the help so far.

Biggest thing to remember is make sure everything seals tightly so you can get some control over operation. often this type of smoker runs hot cuz they aren't sealed tightly

Just curious how this turned out? I tried the barrel lid thing on my DBS.........it absolutely sucked. Ended up making a fb door on the end.
