Gas shocks to hold up lids question

Has anyone used gas shocks on their lids? I currently just use a couple steel rods to prop mine open but they can be a pain so I’d like to eliminate them and go with helper shocks. Just not sure how they’d react around the heat.

There are several on Builds on the site utilizing gas shocks . Pretty sure most are mounted external to keep from heat and piston getting contaminated. There was also a build awhile back with hood springs . Most builds with big doors just use counter balance positioned to releave some of the right and hold doors open with no prop rod needed.

That rod idea scares me. That heavy door crashing down could really cause some body harm as well as damage to shelves and utensils. I would much rather see a door that holds itself open and avoids catches and props that can fail or get bumped. Shocks are definitely a valid idea as opposed to a counterweight but I would still fabricate it so the shocks just assist and the door holds itself open by falling back on the tank.

Yea. I’ve never liked the rods for that exact reason. That’s why I’ve been kicking around the idea of adding gas shocks before I repaint it. Since my rig has a full length rear fire box, the stacks are centered behind each lid. Guess I could run the counter weight arms past the stacks and attach the counter weight behind them. I’ll probably end up going with 2 80lb shocks on each door. May install those first to see how much counter wait I’ll actually need.

The counter weight would not need a shock if done properly.
