Nice work...a rolling gantry? What do you think the lift capacity might be regarding weight? Can you get to lift your entire smoker when it completed?

Nice gantry. We all could use one. Well maybe not the lucky ones with forklifts. :kewl:

I have no clue what the lifting capacity is, it is made from 4x4 preasure treated lumber the top beam is a 4x6 and the wheels are rated at about 600 lb each. I think it was all less than 100 bucks to build, which maybe a lot for only needing to use it for less than an hour of work. The pipe for my main cook chamber weighs in at about 430 lbs. I don't know If would feel comfortable lifting more than about 600 lbs with it but it may handle more.. I knew I would need some way of getting the pipe out of the truck and supporting it while I welded I to the trailer and this is what I came up with. I made it wide enough to back my truck under neath. I wish it was a little bit taller, but I wanted to be able to push it in and pout of the garage if I needed too. It would be good to have around for other stuff but it takes a lot of space in the garage. I'll likey take it apart, now that I'm done with it or maybe make it into a swing set for my son.

Decisions... Decsions...

I can't decide between an insulated firebox, or a warmer above the firebox. I don't think I can do both, because of the amount of weight behind the axle. Any suggestions? What would you do?

I don't know where u are located, but my .02 would be a warming cabinet. I think you'll get the most bang with it. Although insulating the FB won't add much weight, and if you are in cold country, or have small children, then I would go that way.

How's that for a definite maybe? Heck with it do both!

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

Small children is a concern for me. I will go with the insulated fire box. Then I can determin how much more weight I can handle on the back of that trailer without it flipping back on me.

ahhhh, its just weight. Is there any chance that you can add an axle.

It looks like insulating the FB for the position of the axle. But if you're willing to cut the rear cross member you could have both and just touch up the cross member after moving the whole thing forward about a foot.

Nice idea, However, that is more work that I am willing to take on at this point. Maybe I could make the warmer out of 3/16" instead of 1/4" steel to safe some weight. With the an insulated the warmer would not get much heat directly from the firebox so I would not worry about the 3/16" warping, Then I could cut an adjustable port from the cook chamber to the warmer to allow smoke and heat into the warmer from the cook chamber.

Sure the 3/16" thing will help, if you're only going to have one opening into the WB it would be the top of the FB into it if it was mine.

Well Folks, I Haven't been on here in a long while I have been very busy BBQing.. any how here are the finished and final pics of the build. The insulated really added weight to the back, so I mounted a 100 lb weight to the front to stabalize it. all in all it worked out.
