Wheel Base Width Question For Towable Smoker

Post by Q-Dat » April 25th, 2015, 11:23 am

I'm building a 24" wide smoker. My question is pretty simple. Can I get away with 36" from wheel to wheel outside measurement, or do I need to go up to 48"? I really want to keep it as narrow as possible, but I also don't want it flipping over in a curve.

I know it will also depend on how high up it sits do any info is appreciated.

I would do a 54" axle at least which is about sized for a 4' wide trailer. You will use up that width a lot quicker than you would think.

I've made a couple of 24" smokers on trailers. Both trailers were 43" wide. Depending on your axle that should put your outside tire measurement at about 60" or so. I haven't had any issues with towing. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I wanted to keep this as small as possible, but it may not happen. I really only wanted to make the pit towable. Not a full trailer build. The goal was a towable pit with a small footprint that I can still roll into my cargo trailer if I need to. I think I can still make that happen, but now I will need to run the wheels perpendicular to the tank instead of parralel.
