Counter sink FB on trailer deck

Post by SmokyJon » July 17th, 2013, 7:55 am

I have seen alot of you put the fire box below the deck of the trailer. I am guessing this is to lower the height of the cooking chamber to be accessible from ground level, without getting on trailer.
My question is, How far below the deck should the bottom of the firebox be? I was thinking I shouldn't put the bottom of the FB any lower than the bottom of the axle tube. Is this correct?

I think everyone would agree with that …. in a perfect world….

Higher is better if you can afford it … just gives you more ground clearance for those pesky railroad crossings…. :D

More is better. The closer you are to the axels, the less clearance you need.

If you are too low, I have seen guys put a dolly wheel on the FB. Just gotta remember to go slow in those questionable spots.

You also can put a sacrificial piece of steel on the corners of the trailer that would hit the ground just before the FB. This is what camper makers do.

I think before we kinda agreed that 6" ground clearance is what the minimal is? For the bottom of the FB....

If you can't fix it by sheer force or cursing......then it can't be fixed.....

I don't mean to drop the F-bomb here but Frank told me once 8", but a foot is ideal.

Frank.

F bomb.

I see what you did there… :)

And I've always thought 11-3/4 inches was perfect ever since I misread that tape measure that one time…. :D
