Safety chains for trailer...location?

Post by Puff » June 24th, 2014, 7:08 pm

Almost everything is finally done. I took the trailer out for a test ride earlier this evening when it dawned on me, where are the safety chains?

This trailer has a removable tow bar and it is about 44" long. Do the safety chains get added to the tow bar or back to the trailer?

If they go back to the trailer, they will be very long and probably drag. Thus is one thing I never thought about. Looking for suggestions.

Thanks

Egor's safety chains only anchor on the drawbar.
That's why there are 2 linch pins holding the drawbar to the trailer frame.
Nearly no chance both could ever fail.

If you think you would sleep better then add another safety chain to the drawbar next to the trailer main frame and chain it to the trailer. At that point your drawbar becomes just another link in the chain….. :D

Thank you Gizmo. Taking it to my friends house tomorrow after work. I'll need to weld the chains to the bar. I had more than a few last minute things to do tonight. You know, little dumb things that only take a minute to do...times 20! He called tonight. This "party" is snowballing into a mini festival. 72 people and yesterday he had to install a new septic system....

Well, welded on the chains today after work...went to pick up 2 cases o' St. Louis ribs and a case o' baby backs. Also have 4 8 lb pork shoulder. And... Here it is....on it's way to its venue...my friends house. Tracks great at 60mph and got way too many strange looks on the way. New Jersey must have a real shortage of smoked foods as no one invited, turned down the invite when they heard a smoker was going to be cooking ribs and pork
