Stick size

Hello all.
Getting to the point where I have to start welding. It's been a while since I welded anything so this should be interesting,lol. What I was wonding was, what size of rod I should use for the tank( .168") for hinges and flat stock and for the fire box at 1/4" plate. I may be buying a Lincoln 225 if I can't borrow one. Thanks.

If your talking about a stick welder....then your gonna find that you are gonna be a while and go thru a crap load of sticks....mig welding is the fastest and easiest way to go...

I don't do much with stick myself, but I have tons of 1/8" 6011 and 7018 that i use for perty much everything. smoker tom does a lot with stick and kam and I believe Blazer. one of them should be along perty quick with a more accurate answer. seems like those are the main 2 rods tho.

Thanks for the input. I'll likely go with a Lincoln 225 because thats really all I can put out at this time. I borrowed a welder from a family member and was excited to get started but didn't get to burn one stick due to the fact the machine won't turn one,LOL!! So I'm buying one.. I do have access to a mig but it's 120 volt,not really interested if I'm welding 1/4" plate.. I have looked for some used migs in my area but they usually start at $2000. I'll pick up a stick machine at Lowes,it should be good for the amount I will use it. .

Shawnt, if your machine is AC only then in this order I would proceed.
Firebox.
6011 3/32 for your first pas then cap with an AC 7018 3/32.
Hinges and the alike can all be done with the 7018 3/32.

For your door straps and all 1/8" material going to thicker material I prefer a 6013 3/32.
If your machine is AC/DC then go DC reverse and trade the 6011's for 6010's They freeze fast are nice for roots but are meant for DC welding only. Also try to get some Atom arc 7018's they run really smooth.

Your very welcome Frank. Sorry I have been pretty busy and spread thin so spending a lot of time in front of the puter is not happening. I will post some updates on the build this weekend it has been slow on it as well.

Eastwood makes a 175 amp 220v unit for around 500 dollars. It's a fair machine if you want to mig weld, just has a short duty cycle. It also comes with a spool gun if that interests you any. Just throwing it out there.

I'm gonna pick some nits here.... Dollars to donuts, Eastwood doesn't make it. IIRC, that's a Chinese inverter machine that you can get with any one of several different brands on it.

Oh, and nice thread necromancy it, the thread is 6 years old.....
