More on cutoff wheels

Post by Puff » December 14th, 2014, 9:44 pm

I know I could be doing something wrong so let me ask to see if I am behind or equal to the set standards for cutting.

If I take a piece of 1/4" plate that I need to cut 24" off in a straight line...I will use 2 - 4.5" cutoff wheels and about an inch of a third.

Is this above or below what you guys might use to cut the same distance?

If I figure out what the cost per inch is.... It comes out to about 17 cents an inch for 1/4"

That sounds about right to me Puff. When you finally break down and buy a plasma cutter, you're going to kick yourself for not doing it a lot sooner. I just noticed your "new and improved" signature :kewl:

Plasma has its place, specially until you get steady. There are still tons of times that I grab the cut off wheel. The downside to the plasma is, every movement shows x100 in your cut. Get steady or use a good guide and your golden. Practice makes prefect.

Not found of the wheels, a good straight edge and a cir cutter are the bomb. I actually want a gantry table with no motors. I have a large market for hand cut art, they dont want cnc. So I want the gantry for consistant height, and the torch always straight. Along with a smooth glide action. I want a cnc also tho.

All I want is to be able to cut out my straight line smoker parts, 2-3 a year at most and an occasional stack circle ...but if that's to hard, I'll go to a square stack !

Those discs are just annoying now

Trick to cut off wheels is to not press down on the too hard when your cutting, put a lighter amount of pressure on the wheel. I personally cut a "guide" score into the piece that I am cutting and work back and forth along the score cut until I start breaking through in spots. Then I work from one end to the other making the final cut through the material. That is what I found works best for me anyways. :-)

Also keep the disk at a 90' angle to the metal. When it not at 90' it causes it to ware out faster.

CRS I have that circle cutter but when I try to use it my plasma cutter acts like I don't have a ground. Any tips for use would be appreciated.
