Harbor Freight Handheld Tile Saw(so far so good)

Post by Q-Dat » April 21st, 2015, 9:04 am

I know that most here probably already have plenty of equipment and would have no need for this, but I needed to make some clean cuts on the 120 gallon tank that I am making into a pellet smoker. I was in harbor freight and noticed this little saw. Its nade for tile, but it goes over 12,000 rpm and can use the 4" cutoff wheels that they sell. Well I decided that for $40 it was worth a try. Yesterday I used it to cut off one of the end caps. The tank is 1/4" which I suppose would be impressive enough, but what I didn't know was that when you cut just outside the weld on these tanks you are actually cutting through two layers. I did break several wheels getting the hang of using it, but once I did it went much better. The jury is obviously still out on the little saw, but so far I like it.

Looks like it did a pretty nice job. How long did it take to cut the bell off.

Actually this took a while. Probably the better part of two hours. However a big chunk of that was figuring out the best way to use it without breaking the 4" wheels. It probably took twice as long to cut the first half as it did the second. I used a bunch of wheels, but most of that was breaking them cutting the first part.

Without a doubt! I noticed that the pattern of the fiber reenforcement in these wheels is not nearly as tight as say the Dewalt wheels or the other brands.

Did better on the other end. Took half the time and only used 9 wheels instead of 20 LOL!

Most definitely! Lots of sparks and dust with this but I have some very clean cuts. I am wondering though if I should use the thicker wheels when I cut the door to give a touch more clearance when it closes.

It will take a lot longer....I tried this when I'd first started building and the thin wheels go thru much much faster. I used the air powered cut off tool. In winter without gloves...it's like frostbite :D
