I need a drill press

Post by mp4 » August 25th, 2015, 9:14 pm

Anyone have any suggestions? I acquired a floor model from my brother-in-law several years ago. He passed away and one of his boys needed one so I passed it on...now I need to replace it. There are some options on Craigslist but I really don't know what's junk and what's OK. I looked at new...Delta, Jet, Grizzly, Craftsman...does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking a 3/4 hp 12 speed but have no strong feelings about that and can be swayed to go another direction.

The motor on my Walker-Turner that I've had for probably 30 years died. I'm trying to decide between replacing the motor or buying a new unit...but the nicer import drill presses get expensive in a hurry. For metalworking you want something that can slow down a lot for drilling big holes / hole saws.

I'll be interested to hear what you do on this.

I found a Jet 3/4 HP 17" drill press at an auction yesterday and picked it up for $200. It's a 1992 model but was clean and had probably only been used for wood. There were some nit picky things that I fixed but overall I'm thrilled with it. Image
