composition of checker plate

Post by Miles » April 3rd, 2016, 9:08 am

Is checker plate made of different steel than flat plate?
I was welding plates onto a steel Bobcat bucket yesterday, using an a/c stick welder with 7014 1/8 rod at 130 amps. Two plates were flat steel, two plates where checker plate.
Welding the flat plate I got a nice[for me] fillet weld. Welding the checkerplate I got a dogs breakfast. Wouldn't penetrate and got gobs of weld sticking everywhere but where I wanted it. I adjusted the amperage up and down but didn't make any difference other than get a lot of undercut. I filled in the welds by going over them a few times, but I don't know how strong the welds ended up.
Any ideas if the steel is different in checker than flat? Couldn't find anything definite using Google.

I'm not sure but I've used a lot of checkered plate with no issues. I don't know if yours was new or used but I've heard of people having issues with some types of steel being magnetized for some reason.

Measure Twice.....Cut Three Times.
