Goofy question

Post by johnney » January 16th, 2013, 4:48 pm

Like I've said before its been a long time since I've welded. I thought I'd run this past the experts. Can you weld aluminum with oxy acetaline?

Next time you're at a farm expo show look up the guy selling that "special" rod that does this. I'm pretty sure what you are doing with it is closer to soldering - very different penetration/strength level ... :)

TQ what do you think?

You guys are right on. They make a soldering rod that you can fill holes in aluminum, but I wouldn't call it welding.

i`ll hold off till TQ answers, but when you melt the "parent" metal and introduce a filler rod, in my books that is welding, penitration is subject to how much of the parent metal you melt. At Tech I was taught to lead " burn", which is basically welding, DC may know about that method.....................

Well I can assure you if I am gonna be welding any it would be heli-arc or mig I am setup to do both processes Mig is a little less forgiven as far as the metal needing to be clean. Welding alumnium with helic - produces a beautiful weld but it must be very clean. If welding thicker metal switch to helium or 75% argon 25% helium and it will make a huge difference the weld puddle will be more fluid and take less amps with the helium. That being said i too have seen the farm expo trick and saw a guy fill a hole in a coke can.... but I assure i aint getting no torch out on a customers product. So I would say mig or heli-arc all the way

:-t .question was!, can you gas weld Aluminium, not............ what do you prefer, I saw a story about the US army water canteens from WW1. and they were welded either side, 30 years before sheild gas arc welding was invented.
I do agree with TQ tho !, mig or tig is better....besides it`s 44c / 118 f here at the moment! #:-s

Mac i have been welding for over 30 yrs and i have nevr seen it done. I am sure someone on earth can do it but if he can so can I. If you find him let me know cause i want to take a peep.LOL And why is is so hot where you stay at???????? I bet the weld with a torch looks like a bulls butt sewed up with a grapevine tho. INMHO!!!!!! =)) =)) =)) =)) =)) =)) Mac maybe that is why the soldiers were always searching for a mud puddle..... canteens leaked :D :o :ymdaydream:
