Got Wood Online?

Post by g8adventure » July 10th, 2012, 10:20 pm

I've been considering purchasing online from Smokinlicious, but the prices seem a bit high to me even before shipping. I have some mesquite and apple chunks from Home Depot, but they are dry as bones and even after soaking, I just don't think its good. Smokinlicious suggests to me that I purchase their un-filleted blocks, but they are $50+ for a sq foot box. Is that as expensive as it seems to me?

Are there any online sources any of you would recommend?

You might check with some of your local sawmills, landscapers, and/or tree trimming services. Here the sawmill down the road sells 40# buckets (basically half a plastic barrell) of chunks for $50 and if you take your bucket back each trip you get $10 off.

Oh and check craigslist, thats how i found those guys. I think i just search "smoker wood"

Why buy when you can build

Well I ordered 15lbs Pecan and 15lbs Peach from Fruita...unfortunately the peach will not be sent until after the 17th, because its on back order. I really look forward to using a combo of pecan and peach in the UDS, something about that combo just sounds like the ticket to awesome Q IMO.

I just got done reading the storage requirements that Fruita has on their website and now I'm worried the wood will go bad, before I get to use it all as I don't have a an extra fridge or freezer or enough room in my everyday one for 30lbs. Fruita claims that the woods "life will be shortened to about 30 days" if stored above 72 degrees. What do you all think?

There are guys that swear by 2 year old aged hickory.
Some swear by the greenest mesquite they can lay their hands on.
My Dad grew up in Kentucky and says Hickory is the only wood you can fell in the morning and burn that same night with no side effects...

SO WHO KNOWS!

Sounds like DC's storage method is the best - HOWEVER - I've also been told to never store wood in the house - keep it 50 feet away from the house if possible - cause of bugs.

Are you planning on burning this as splits, chunks, chips ?
I start the clock running as soon as the wood is actually split -I think this opens it up to season. I think all wood flavors do better 4 to 6 months later from that date.
I have also heard that if you are going to stockpile then after it's seasoned chunk or chip it down and plastic bag it and label and seal it - supposed to keep longer....

I think the truth is that everybody has their own voodoo magic they think is best and to get wood truly "doty" would take several years - you're prolly okay...:)

In this case Rick buying from this guy on line....bugs hopefully won't be an issue as he has already had it seasoning in storage....and yes fresh cut wood does carry risks of buggies! Ask Frank ....he'll testify to it.... :wtf:

Which is odd because bugs actually help cider if there are some in the mash ... trust me - I know from first hand experience... DARN good cider! :D

...I lost track of several days one afternoon cause of that stuff .... wait .... what? ...

I'm sorry - was that out loud?
