Pear wood

Post by GV/Welder » June 19th, 2013, 7:51 pm

I would like to know if anyone has ever used pear wood for smoking meat, and if so what was the outcome. My father-in-law is cutting down a pear tree, and I wanted to know if it would be worth bringing the wood home.

I've tasted some serious good Q smoked with Pear.

If it can't be smoked .... try frying it. It that don't work, it's probably best just left alone

Pear is better than apple.

If it is fruit or nut-bearing it should be good. The confusing part is that there are variations within the pear family (like the ornamental bradford pear in my front yard for example) that do not bear fruit and I've heard those aren't much good. fwiw

As DC said, try it with some chicken first.

Thanks everyone. I think I will be bringing the pear wood home. It is a fruit bearing pear tree.
Again thanks

Most fruit wood is great for smoking. I have never used pear but my personal fav is Apple. Great for pork, chicken and fish

I love pear wood with chicken and certain cuts of pork. I've also used Bradford pear and got the same results. Bradford pear trees actually do fruit, but they're small fruits and just ornamental. They smoke the same as a regular pear tree, IMO.

TAKE IT! I'm using some right now for my smoked sirloin tip and chicken. It is a mellower flavor in my opinion, but a sweet wood. Cherry is still my favorite, followed by apple, but I had some given to me and I'm glad they did.
