If it is fruit or nut-bearing it should be good. The confusing part is that there are variations within the pear family (like the ornamental bradford pear in my front yard for example) that do not bear fruit and I've heard those aren't much good. fwiw

I love pear wood with chicken and certain cuts of pork. I've also used Bradford pear and got the same results. Bradford pear trees actually do fruit, but they're small fruits and just ornamental. They smoke the same as a regular pear tree, IMO.
TAKE IT! I'm using some right now for my smoked sirloin tip and chicken. It is a mellower flavor in my opinion, but a sweet wood. Cherry is still my favorite, followed by apple, but I had some given to me and I'm glad they did.
