I just got back from home depot. I bought 4 of the twin packs. 111.2 lbs of charcoal for $29.17 with sales tax. I LIKE IT!!

I was tempted to tell the guy to get the forklift and load me a pallet onto my pickup...but I think I woulda ticked off the wife, especially after she saw how much money I have into the new smoker.

Home Depot wouldn't load the pallet into my truck the last time I was there. They use CHEP pallets that have to be returned. So I told 'em, better get about 5 of them kids out here and start loading it then. Unless you don't really want that $300 sale.

Home Depot wised up on the charcoal. They are only putting out like quarter pallets. I asked if that was it and the response was "for now" they would restock as some was made available. Made available = boss telling them to bring out 20 more bundles. I had to settle for 5 packs, I figure he was waiting for me to drive off the lot. I'm gonna get him tonight. I told the wife we are swinging by before and after dinner. She's happy, my obsession with charcoal scored her an evening meal out.

loss leaders are supposed to make as many different happy customers as possible to stimulate word of mouth and impulse buys ...

Loss leaders are very effective for shoppers who do not preplan their shopping list. Some guy walks in looking for Item xyz and sees the charcoal. Grabs a bag and before he leavse he might have 2 bottles of lighter fluid or even a cheapo grill since at that price of charcoal he can finally afford to puull off the big back yard shindig. I hear these theories all the time from my wife, door busters they are also called, to generate enough hype that it triggers impulse buys or leads to up sales of accessories.

Anymore, and especially in the big box stores, the prices are set by the manufacturer and the store gets a particular cut and/or "trade spending" (manufacturer gives store $$$ to put their item on an end-cap, eye-level, etc) so their profits are relatively fixed regardless of the shelf price of an item. So while loss-leaders are designed to get people into the store, the store's profits from the item are probably not any higher or lower than if they sold it at full price. They really have no fiscal reason to not sell you the product.
