Avoid the cheap stuff (and a clog)

I was going through years of BBQ photos and found a couple showing one of the worse pieces of charcoal my GF smoker ever tried to swallow.

Yah, it caused a clog. This came from a bag of off brand lump charcoal I just had to try. Stick with the name brand stuff that you like (my favorite is RO in the big red bag). If you want to try something new, rip open the whole bag and take a look before dumping a tree limb into your charcoal chute !

Holy cow! I have had very good luck with my GFs. They dont like briquettes very much as the ash builds up at the throat and limits the airflow. I have never seen a branch like that in a bag.

I saw some that was old pallets that weren't even charcoal.

I think this was a case of "its all they had, besides briquettes".

I had never seen it before but it was all like limbs and branches, and none of it had the nice "tingy" sound that RO charcoal makes coming out of the bag.

Thats the good stuff.
