Think I've found the culprit. Olive oil. I forgot about my dad using lard or bacon grease and wiping it down after every cook while still hot. I'll clean it real good and do that.
Put rock salt in it and put it on a burner, gas or otherwise. When it gets good and hot use something steel and scrape it and move the salt around. Salt gets very hot so watch out. The best thing I Have found to put in them is palm oil, it will not turn rancid or varnish. Something almost all other oils and grease will do. After you have it clean and dry coat it down lightly inside and out with palm oil, turn it bottom up and start your gas grill or oven to 350 and let it set for an hr or so. You may have to do it more than once. I use olive oil when I'm cooking then clean it out as soon as I'm done and coat it with palm oil while it is still hot. I've left my dutch ovens for 7,8 months with no problems at all. Also if it has a lid fold a sheet of paper towel and put under the lid so it is still sticking out of it. This keeps the moisture out of it.
WOW Tommy Joe - that sounds a lot like a sticky...

I`d fill it with water and give a good old boiling, then empty it and scrub it with steelwool and then repeat the proccess, then season as per Tommy joe said!
