Something "Fishy"

Post by Gizmo » March 18th, 2012, 9:09 am

Since Frank showed how to light a Reverse flow then I'll show you a little trick I use on charcoal chimneys. The stick you see is a Coghlan Fire Stick. They are sold 10 in a bag and you can order them on the internet. Best thing I've ever used to light charcoal and campfires. Won't add any bad flavor like lighter fluids will. Just search "coghlan's fire sticks" or pick up some at Walmart or Cabella's

Image

I drilled an extra hole in the side of my chimney just above the floor so I could shove one in like a "fuse" .
Then dump the charcoal over it and light the "fuse" and get away fast - use only under adult supervision...:) (kidding)
Image

Here's 2 salmon fillets from the local grocery. The grocer said this was a 322 pounder he pulled in on 3 pound test. I'm not sure I want to try a fish that gave up that easily...
Image

...so I added some of my rib rub #7 to them...
Image

...and onto the kettle for 90 minutes with 13 briquettes and a fistful of apple wood chips...
Image

drafts nearly closed...
Image
temp held perty good but I added a few pre-lit briquettes halfway through from the chimney...

DANG TASTY! - Thanks for the inspiration Billy Barger!

That's a good idea Tommy Joe - and I think I saw a recipe years ago on how to make your own fire sticks - I'd just rather spend that time doing  instead... :)

First off.....the fish is looking darn good.

Now to the fun part.
Not that I would recomend this for cooking BUT...

If your ever bored, fill the chiminney with Match Light charcoal. UH HU yup thats right.

Let her sit for about 15 minutes. Dont get nervous YET.

The best way I have found to light it would be with a fireplace match taped to a yard stick. (Keep your head down too)

Cause your about to light a jet engine !!!!

The only reason I know this is because a really good friend of mine did this very thing, all but the lighting part at distance. LOL He couldnt find a lighter so the coals sat for a good 15 minutes till he found something to light it with.

And then.

WOOF !!!

Haven't been on here in a while. Maybe I can explain myself better. The instructions on my chiminey says to use news paper under the bottom of the chiminey and it use to take me 4 or 5 sheets to get the charcoal going. Just take 1 big sheet of news paper and drizzel a little olive oil on it, and it doesn't take a lot. Wad it up put it under the chiminey and light it. Hope this helped.
