Hello people!
My name is Steve I've been doing BBQ for many years on big box store equipment.
That being said I've had enough of that! Time to build my own and hang with all the
big dogs here to absorb their knowledge I hope. I've been in the metal industry for many years.
From fabricating flame cutting plasma and water jetting to CNC machining .So I feel I can do this
with the help of all the experts that are here and I'm no expert when it comes to BBQ. My first build
will be a vertical RF with FB under the CC . I'm basing my design off the Pitmaker BBQ vault .So
thanks for letting me join in this smoke builder's community .

Welcome! What are your reasons for that style? I ask because the cooker should fit the cooking and I'm curious.

Hopefully I'll have something basic for the experts to look at in a few days.
To answer your question Towtruck right or wrong I like the all in one idea behind the
vertical with CC under it as my maiden voyage . I also like the RF concept I'm looking at.
Also a learning curve controlling temps. On my big box smokers with all the mods I've done
still a hair pulling experience and I'm sure with this also! Up here in the northeast as we get colder its even a bigger struggle.
I feel once I get one under my belt the sky's my limit. My main heat source will be charcoal. I'm coming for propane and going
to the real McCoy of BBQ.

Have you seen the gravity feed smokers?

Chromeski I have I actually watched a video on the Mixon design I'm as green as they come. You would think
something like that it would be hard to control the heat but what do I know. pretty simple design charcoal in
amber falls thru grates chuck some wood on it.

About as close to "set and forget" as you can get in a smoker.

I think it's actually very easy to control temp especially if you invest in a pit controller. The real downside in my opinion is the cost and labor in building one. I haven't actually used one, but I'm currently collecting materials.... I do everything slow. I just think the gf units are the best vertical smoker available. Several guys here have built and used them its worth considering.

Thanks Chromeski for your input cost is everything! That's what I have read pit controller almost a must adds $ 200.00 to build@
I got a clone design going now will be posting shortly on a vertical similar to pitmakers design a few people have build them with
pretty good results. I hope I get input on it. I got 20 ways I can go with it trying to narrow it down. But, the GF can be put on my to do
list for sure !

Controlling your temps is a big deal when it's cold outside. Building around that idea is a good one. My smoker may be a huge heat sink but it's also a huge ice cube when it's cold out and I want it up to temp fast.
