Hello from the Idaho Panhandle!

Post by TBone208 » May 7th, 2020, 1:14 am

Hi everyone! New guy here who has been lurking on this forum for a while, trying to gather info before I build my first smoker. Been wanting a smaller charcoal smoker for a while (just for me and the missus, and occasional small group gatherings of maybe 5-10 people). Researched most of the factory-made possibilities and concluded that unless I’m willing to drop some serious coin ($500+?), I’m probably going to end up with a turd sandwich for a smoker that won’t likely last for many years (a feature I very much desire.)

Went down a bunch of rabbit holes and ended up deciding that a good way to get my feet wet for cheap would be building my a UDS. Looks like they can produce some seriously good ‘que, so I’m excited!

Already watched Frank’s videos on acquiring and prepping a drum for use in a UDS build (thanks Frank!) and am now on the hunt. Will be scouring this thread to answers to my questions along the way, and asking if I can’t find any answers.

Thanks for all the info I’ve already gleaned from your extensive posts here. Much appreciated!

A lot of guys here have the Drums and will be happy to share advice,I’m sure. Also, remember that Frank has quite a few really neat parts and pieces on his website if you are interested.

Either way, take and post some pictures so we can follow your build.

Welcome to the site.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.

Dirtytires: thanks for the tip. Look like he’s got some really cool parts available. I’ll likely end up ordering some!

Welcome aboard.

Learning generally boils down to "Repetition or the avoidance of pain", some people learn by doing, some by watching and some just have to pee on the electric fence.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Henry Ford
