Our first ever build! - 130gal Rf -

Post by Mattbm » May 10th, 2014, 10:29 pm

Hi all. Out of a new found love for true southern BBQ, I've decided to build one to enjoy here up north. The build started on April 10th and so far its progressing nicely. It started out as a 130gal compressor tank that from what the seller told me was in an abandoned grain elevator that toppled over before the compressor could be saved. During the fall, the compressor head was broken, but the tank survived without a dent. The manufacturing plate indicates it was made in Canada in 1973, wall thickness is a nice 3/16" of good ol steel. Firebox is 24"x24"x18'x1/4" diamond plate I scrounged from the scrap yard for $.30 a lb. I managed to score basically new metal that was sitting in the scrap pile. Chimney is approx 27" of 5 1/2" 1/4" wall pipe, another great find @ $.30 a lb. The legs are 2" pipe and nice and strong.
I look forward to your comments and anything you see that might need an adjustment.
I can't wait to get cooking on this rig!!

Thanks everyone for the comments, its much appreciated. I'll post more as I get farther along.

Has anyone got any suggestions for temperature gauges? My thought was to use one on each door roughly centered, then look at using a prob set up to monitor the meat temp.

Check out our brother site (sister sounds girly) bbqsmokersupply.com. There you will find Smoker Builder thermos you could center in each door. Then there's always the Maverick 732.

Thanks for that. At least I know I made a supported choice :) Shortly after i posted that question I discovered the "brother" site and ordered myself two of those units. Time to research the Mavrick 732....

Thanks!
