Hello, Newbie here from Central Coast of California

Post by loadpin » October 13th, 2016, 12:20 am

How is everyone doing today? I've been bar-b-q'ing for many years with a typical home built standard stick burning adjustable open Bar B Q style rig for our tri tips and other great foods, way before these rigs were called Santa Maria style bar b q's ;-). I was lucky to learn from 2 great cooks, my Dad and Uncle, but we never did any real smoking. I'm also lucky to still live on the little farm my Grandparents bought in 1914, so I guess I'm now considered one of the real old time locals, plus my place has plenty of coastal red oak available on it to trim for my pit and hopefully future stick smoker. Besides my open adjustable "Q", I have a gasser with the amazin smoker addition for it and I've just purchased a MES 40" that I'm going to attempt to get the hang of, I know it's one of those electric ones ;-), But that's why I'm here, I have the welders and all the tools needed to build a smoker, so I'll be reading up on this from you pros. Well all you Smoker builders and Cooks have a great day. This looks like fun.
Thanks in advance for upcoming answers, Rj

Welcome :welcome:
You've come to the right place for answers to your questions. I'm sure on of the pro's will chime in soon

Learning generally boils down to "Repetition or the avoidance of pain", some people learn by doing, some by watching and some just have to pee on the electric fence.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Henry Ford

Welcome RJ!

Decide what type of smoker you might want to build and ask away.

If it's tourist season, how come I can't shoot 'em?

Welcome to the crew RJ!

you can also look at the plans from our sister site if you would like to get some ideas that way. I'm not trying to sell you plans, but there is some good reasons for getting them. 1. They are tried and true, so you already know they work right. 2. The small fee they charge you for them keeps this site going. and like that

We would be glad to help you develop your own too!

Thanks everyone For the welcome.

Also thank you Rodcrafter for the recommendation on the plans. That was actually how I found your forums, it's when I stumbled across the smoker plans site. I was thinking about the exact same thing, one thing I've learned after a lot of lost time and expense,it is to look at proven ideas, ask questions, and always use the resources available that have way more experience. I saw a picture of a "Santa Maria Style BBQ" with a lid for the grill and offset smoker, which I really thought was great, so I think if I get the SM style basic plans, I figure I can add/adapt to them with the offset smoker and lid idea and then after showing the group my ideas, I'll start getting after it. It's going to be fun.

Welcome to the forum RJ. I'm new here also but I've been following these guys for years and have bought a couple of sets of plans from Smokerplans.net and won't build another smoker without the aid of them. They are invaluable when you think of the time (and $$) it takes to do things over twice (or in my case 3 times usually lol).

Currently smoking on:
55 gal UDS
30"×60" RF trailer mounted stick burner
